Bone Toss: read the wind, take your step, dodge the bone thieves

Dog and Cat each start with 100 HP and every hit takes 25 to 35. How wind, the one step per turn and the bird, squirrel and pigeon in the middle decide a match.

Bone Toss is a turn-based throwing duel between a Dog and a Cat. On your turn you drag to aim, release, and watch the bone fly across the yard. Land it on the other side and they lose HP; miss, and it is their turn. Simple to start, but three things decide almost every match: the wind, where you stand, and the animal in the middle. You can play it in your browser.

How a match is scored

  • Dog and Cat both start with 100 HP.
  • A hit takes away 25 to 35 HP, so a match usually needs three or four good throws.
  • The match ends as soon as one side reaches zero. If nobody is down after 40 turns (20 each), the side with more HP wins; if HP is exactly equal at that point, the Dog takes it.

Read the wind every turn

The wind is rolled again at the start of every turn, with a new direction and strength. A small wind gauge shows an arrow for the direction and a bar for how strong it is. While you drag, a short dotted arc shows how the bone will start to fly, and that arc already includes the wind. Use it to judge the first part of the throw, then adjust your power for the rest of the distance.

Use your one step

Before you throw, you may take one step, forward or back, once per turn. You can move up to four steps forward from where you started. Moving closer makes your throws easier, but it also brings you closer to the other side’s throws, so think about whether you want to trade shots at short range.

Watch out for the bone thieves

Three animals take turns guarding the middle: a bird, a squirrel and a pigeon. Only one is active on each turn, and they rotate. If the bone flies into it, it snatches the bone: the screen shows “Snagged!” and your throw is wasted. A clean miss shows “Nice dodge!” instead. When the thief sits in your usual path, try a different arc, higher or flatter, to go around it.

Two ways to play

In Play vs AI, you are the Dog and the computer plays the Cat. In Two players, two people share one device and take turns, which makes it a good quick game to pass back and forth.
